About the organization

A better future for everyone. This ambition motivates our scientists in executing their leading research and inspiring teaching. At Utrecht University, the various disciplines collaborate intensively towards major societal themes. Our focus is on Dynamics of Youth, Institutions for Open Societies, Life Sciences and Sustainability. The city of Utrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, with a charming old center and an internationally oriented culture that is strongly influenced by its century-old university. Utrecht city has been consistently ranked as one of the most livable cities in the Netherlands.

As an Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacology you will be employed at the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology & Clinical Pharmacology, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Faculty of Science, Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

The Faculty of Science consists of six departments: Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Information and Computing Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Mathematics. The Faculty is home to 5900 students and nearly 1600 staff and is internationally renowned for the quality of its research. The Faculty's academic programmes reflect developments in today's society.

The Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) is the research institute of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Utrecht University. UIPS focuses on processes around discovery, development, and use of drugs and medical nutrition using molecular and technological principles from the Natural and Life Sciences. This research is ideally positioned in the Faculty of Science to work on basic scientific problems and to translate new findings into potential solutions to urgent societal medical needs, which are addressed in the Faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Every year around 400 peer-reviewed articles are published and around 30 PhD candidates defend their thesis. UIPS is partner in several open source innovation networks.

The Division of Pharmacoepidemiology & Clinical Pharmacology consists of a multidisciplinary team of young and internationally oriented researchers. The research programme is directed at several epidemiological, therapeutic, and policy aspects of chronic drug use with a focus on advanced affordable biomolecular and cellular therapies.

The Centre for Clinical Therapeutics is embedded in the Division. The Centre focuses on research aimed at improving the outcomes of medicines use in clinical practice. Patients are at the heart of our research interests and we are studying the interactions between molecules and patients, and between patients and the broader context of the healthcare system. Research at the Centre for Clinical Therapeutics is driven by questions from clinical practice. Molecular/mechanistic aspects of treatments are linked to pharmacoepidemiological outcome studies. Systems pharmacy research offers insight in the contribution of context related aspects. Variability in drug response may also be explained by variation in the actual use of the medication (adherence, prescribing patterns) and the health care system. It is actually most likely that all these aspects jointly influence both intended and unintended drug effects.

In the Centre of Clinical Therapeutics, pharmacologists with clinical/mechanistic expertise, pharmacoepidemiologists with a strong methodological background and practice researchers rooted in clinical care join forces to study, explain and improve pharmacotherapy in clinical practice. There are strong links with the UMC Utrecht, NKI/AVL, psychiatric institutions, other hospitals and community pharmacies.

Additional information
Additional information about the vacancy can be obtained from: Dr Rob Heerdink, PhD or Prof Toine Egberts (science.officeff@uu.nl, + 31 30 25 373 24).
