Sangath, Goa, in collaboration with Indian Law Society, Pune invites applicants for the post of “Research Assistant”, to work on a research project called Young Lives Matter, headed by Madhumitha Balaji.

Project description:
Young Lives Matter is a case control study funded by Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance, a partnership between Wellcome Trust, UK and Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The aim of this study is to understand the reasons for youth suicide in India. As a part of this study, young people who have died by suicide will be compared with living young people from the same neighbourhood, and young people who died by accident, on factors that are thought to be related to suicide, such as mental health, life experiences, and personality.

Job description:
The Research Assistant will be expected to:
1) Identify suicide and accident cases from police records
2) Identify living young persons from census records
3) Travel within Pune and its neighbouring areas and conduct interviews with family, friends, and close associates of identified young persons in all groups
4) Translate recruitment and interview documents into local languages
5) Assist in entering, managing and storing data collected
6) Assist in maintaining project equipments such as computers and vehicles
7) Prepare reports and documents on data collected
8) Communicate with and report to the project leaders and collaborators

Qualifications and Work experience

Essential requirements:
1) Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology or Psychiatric Social Work
2) Good communication and interviewing skills
3) Proficiency in MS Word
4) Fluency in English, Marathi, Hindi: Speaking, Reading, Writing
5) Willingness to travel within Pune and neighbouring areas for field work
6) Willingness to travel within India for receiving training
7) Willingness to work flexible hours
8) Two-Wheeler License

Desirable:
1) At least two years of work experience in the assessment or treatment of mental health conditions in an NGO, mental health hospital or any other mental health organisation
2) Previous research experience involving interviews with individuals affected by mental health problems and their families
3) Previous work experience in NGOs dealing with suicide prevention or treatment of high-risk individuals
