What is Solution Focused Practices?
In the late 1970’s and early 80’s when therapists started realizing the non-pragmatic, prolonged,
excessively past-oriented and non-goal directed nature of traditional therapies, Steve de Shazer,
Insoo Kim Berg and their colleagues’ answer to that was the Solution Focused Brief Therapy.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy emerged in 1980’s when de Shazer, Berg and their colleagues at
their Brief Family Therapy Centre, Milwaukee started seeing their cases with an inquisitive mind,
exploring what ingredients were really helping the clients in therapy. Focusing on such
ingredients in their practice lead to the evolution of Solution Focused Therapy. Unlike other models, the Solution Focused model believes in the client’s capacities, strengths, possibilities and resources. It believes that every problem has an exception to it and that the client has successfully coped with their problem situation at some point in their life. Solution Focused Therapy approaches the client’s concerns at surface level without dwelling much into causality and contrastingly, eliciting what the client’s preferred future is. Techniques of the approach are embedded in the language used in the therapy, as it also believes that the client’s problems are in interaction with others and their environment. Intervention here is to build solutions by taking a collaborative, non-expert stance and leading the client from one step behind. Several evaluation studies have strengthened the evidence base for this therapeutic approach.
Over a period of three and half decades, the Solution Focused approach has grown beyond the
therapeutic realm; today it has implications in management, coaching and community services.
The use of solution focused ideas and techniques in these fields are generally referred to as
Solution Focused Practice (SFP) and the broader perspective that encompasses these practices
are referred to as Solution Focused Approaches (SFA). The great possibility of using the
approach to areas beyond the therapy room speaks for the unique versatile nature of SFBT.
Solution Focused Approach in India
In India, the solution-focused approach does not have many developments yet and also there is
very little number of experts in this area. Current Indian Scenario of psychological intervention
demands a briefer kind of therapeutic approach, which has to be evidence based and also people
are looking for a faster recovery. The conference aims at propagating and training professional
in the area as well as establishing the department as pioneers in solution focused practices.
