Master of Social Work MSW Salary in India

How Can Social Workers with Master of Social Work (MSW) Degree Live in India With Current Salary Rate. In India, the average salary of a Fresh Social Worker can be expected between Rs. 3 to 4 lakhs. The government must revise the salary structure of professional social workers in development sector.

It is time to write something about the situation of social workers in India. Social Workers who have done 3 years of Bachelor degree and 2 years of Masters in Social Work [1 year more than B Tech students, same as MBBS and comes out of college expect a minimal salary of INR 25000. Well, how much do they get. I will share some job posts as examples for that.
1. Post of Social Worker inNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HEALTH AND NEURO SCIENCES, Bangalore
Applications are invited from the eligible candidates for filling up of one post of “Social Worker” on contract basis for NIMHANS funded Project entitled “Barriers in accessing social welfare benefits for persons with disability due to severe mental disorders in rural Karnataka: A cross sectional survey” – under the Department of Psychiatric Social Work, NIMHANS

I personally send an email to them asking for a clarification in this. Kindly see the mail that i sent to them.

I am a social worker and saw the vacancy of social worker in NIMHANS for the project “Barriers in accessing social welfare benefits for persons with disability due to severe mental disorders in rural Karnataka: A cross sectional survey”. I noticed that the Emoluments is Rs.12,500/- P.M (Consolidated). I would like to pose a question as how can a social worker who have done 2 years MSW can work for this much money. What will be the point of studying 2 years of MSW if we are getting this much amount which lesser than a day laborer. I am sorry if I tried to offend you in anyway. Kindly let me know your reply.

The Reply I got on 27 July

I do understand your concern.
The DMHP salary from the State Govt is fixed to the same, which we have followed.
Hence we have also invited BSW's to apply, in case, MSW's are not able to apply for the given salary.

The Reply sent on 27 July

Could you kindly share details on the salary rate of social workers in DMHP. As per my understanding it was INR 2000 per day. There has been nation wide criticisms against salary structure of DMHP and that is the major reason why many DMHP posts are vacant till now and the scheme was complete failure in India. I would like to point out an Anganwadi teacher gets INR 10000 per month and ASHA worker get INR 7000. Considering this fact that i think, BSW can apply does not justify a poor salary structure.
Just to point out the fact, NIMHANS is the institution that created the operation manual of district mental health program and the salary rate is provided as; Psychologist and social workers will be Rs. 10000 per month to Rs 500 increase every year.Source: DMHP Manual.
This DMHP manual is so poorly constructed as it states that there is no provision to purchase a vehicle in the DMHP. In the methodology, manual states mental health camps should be conducted at every taluk / tehsil of all districts, obviously without a vehicle.
The Delhi DMHP salary rate of social workers was NR 50,000 for Mphil holders and INR 30000 for MSW holders. Source:DMHP Advertisment Delhi. In Jamshadpur it was INR 30000 for MSW holders. Source: Advertisment DMHP, CIP Ranchi

Update: Article on Salary Rate of Social Workers in India

I have been searching for salary structure of social workers and found an article on "Social Worker Salary in India". This website shamelessly tries to reduce the salary amount of social workers by stating how much social workers are liable to get. I will just point out some statements in this article;
"The Social workers are less concerned with the higher packages."

"Social workersare able to start their career with Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 per month"

"Social workers working on government projects with NGOs which provides them salary more than the subsistence level. Since, they are employing them on a project basis, which leads them to draw higher salary. They are liable to get Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 per month."

"There are many social workers, which are famous today and now able to get high income. The only thing that can make them to earn high is fame."
I have sent an email to them asking for updating the post. Kindly see that mail here. You can also send emails if you agree with me.
To: support[at]naukrihub.com
I read the post in your website. The post is completely outdated and outrageous and need to be updated. Social workers also work to get money and expect a higher package. I am a social worker and i expect a good salary and many of the social workers do. We are social workers and we also have family members to feed or have expectation to live a decent life. Who can live a decent life with such 4000 Rs a month. So kindly update your post and write the current situation and not your judgement.

I have never seen such a judgmental post online than this. Someone who is so illiterate wrote all this and NGOs use this kind of information to pay less for social workers.
Can a social workers live in India with a meager sum of money? After studying 5 years to become a social worker, is this what awaits young social workers and aspiring students. The income of an average social worker in India with an M.A.in social work would be at least 25000 Rs.
However NGOs and agencies purposefully reduces the salary of social worker, thinking these are fine with social workers and is acceptable in the market. Students thinking of taking up degree in Social Work or Sociology gets discouraged due to such low income rate.Average income rate of a social workers should be fixed a minimum of 25000 Rs. Times of India published an article on Is Social work worth it? which clearly explains the situation of social workers in India.
It is time for social workers to start their own enterprises, counselling centers and change this condition. It is time to stop working in someone else's companies, NGOs, hospitals, centers and start ups and start making your own. Start a counseling centers, start an NGO and provide jobs to other fellow social workers. This is the only way to raise the average income of social workers.

Update On CBSE UGC NET Exam Fee

CBSE has hiked the UGC NET JRF exam fee massively. Previously it was INR 650 Rs for General Category and now this has increased to INR 1000. How can students from lower economic category could afford such fee. Still no protest from anywhere. I have written to CBSE but have not received any reply till now.
Mail To CBSE
I am a social worker and noticed a huge hike in the exam fee for the General Category as well as in other categories for CBSE UGC NET Exam. Last time it was Six Hundred Rupees only for General and for this year, it has been hiked to One Thousand Rupees. I would like to know under what basis the fee hike was done. Is there any notification issues by UGC to increase the exam fee. Kindly let me know.
